What Thai Ladyboys Look for in a Boyfriend

Dating in Thailand is often surrounded by stereotypes, especially when it comes to transgender women.

During a casual street interview in Chiang Mai, we spoke with two young Thai transgender women, Fay and Fi, about relationships, dating preferences, and the qualities they value most in a partner.

Rather than discussing nightlife or work, the conversation focused on something much more relatable—finding someone who is kind, respectful, and fun to spend time with.

One answer stood out immediately.

When asked whether they would rather date someone wealthy but boring or someone with less money who was enjoyable to be around, both answered without hesitation:

“Poor but fun.”

For them, personality mattered far more than income.

Still Waiting for the Right Person

Although both women described themselves as single, they had very different personalities.

One explained that she considers herself an introvert and has never been in a relationship.

The other said she prefers spending time with friends and hasn’t felt a strong need to have a boyfriend.

Rather than rushing into relationships, both said they are willing to wait until they meet someone they genuinely connect with.

Social Media Is Where They Meet New People

Like many young adults, both women said they usually meet new people online.

The platforms they mentioned included:

  • Instagram

  • Tinder

  • Facebook

However, despite using social media, they were cautious about sharing personal information publicly and preferred to keep some aspects of their private lives offline.

What They Want in a Boyfriend

When asked about their ideal partner, both gave surprisingly similar answers.

They preferred someone who was:

  • Taller than they are

  • Tan-skinned

  • Respectful

  • Easy to spend time with

Neither limited themselves to Thai men or foreign men.

Instead, they said personality mattered more than nationality.

One explained that she would happily date either.

Splitting the Bill Is Normal

One answer that may surprise some visitors was their attitude toward paying on dates.

When asked who pays, both immediately replied:

“50/50.”

Rather than expecting the man to pay for everything, they preferred sharing expenses equally.

For them, fairness was simply part of a healthy relationship.

Money Isn’t Everything

One of the interview’s most interesting questions asked whether they would rather date:

  • A rich but boring man

  • A poor but fun man

Again, both chose the second option.

They explained that enjoying life together is more important than financial status.

Someone who makes them laugh and creates happy memories is far more attractive than someone who simply has money.

Bangkok vs. Chiang Mai Dating

The conversation also touched on regional differences.

According to the interview, Bangkok’s dating scene feels larger, faster, and offers more opportunities to meet people.

Chiang Mai, on the other hand, was described as quieter, with people generally being more reserved and shy.

While both cities have active dating scenes, the atmosphere feels noticeably different.

The Biggest Red Flag

When asked what immediately makes them lose interest in someone, both women gave exactly the same answer.

Their biggest red flag is:

People who make jokes about ladyboys.

For them, respect comes before attraction.

Someone who mocks transgender people or makes insensitive comments isn’t someone they want to continue getting to know.

Kindness and maturity are essential qualities in any relationship.

Looking Beyond Stereotypes

This interview challenged several common assumptions about dating transgender women in Thailand.

Rather than focusing on money or appearance, both women emphasized equality, mutual respect, shared experiences, and having fun together.

Their answers sounded remarkably similar to what many young people around the world might say.

In the end, they weren’t looking for anything extraordinary.

Just someone who treats them with kindness.
