Ladyboys in the Philippines: Transpinay Culture, Law and Where to Go (2026)
Updated: Oct 4

Short answer: In the Philippines, trans women usually call themselves transpinay. Some also use "ladyboy." Filipinos have long used the older word bakla, but it doesn't mean the same thing. The country is mostly Catholic. It has no national anti-discrimination law and no legal gender change, though many cities protect LGBT people through local ordinances. Filipina trans women have won the world's best-known trans pageant three times, and Quezon City now hosts what organisers call Asia's largest Pride.
The words: bakla, transpinay, ladyboy
Bakla is a Filipino identity for people assigned male at birth who present as feminine. It's often translated as "gay," but De La Salle University research says it's not a direct equivalent. Using it for trans women is described as incorrect and discouraged.
Transpinay (and transpinoy for trans men) was promoted from 2008 by STRAP, the Society of Trans Women of the Philippines, as a clearer word than bakla (STRAP).
Beki or swardspeak is the playful slang that grew up in the bakla community and spread into everyday Filipino. Besh means close friend, and Tom Jones means hungry, from gutom (Vice).
Ladyboy: some Filipina trans women use it about themselves, and others don't. The best rule is to use the word she uses.
What the law says (2026)
No legal gender change. In Silverio v. Republic (2007), the Supreme Court refused to let a trans woman change the sex on her birth certificate. It said any change is up to Congress (ICJ). A 2008 case allowed a change for an intersex person, but that ruling doesn't cover trans people (ICJ).
The SOGIE Equality Bill still isn't law. It was first filed in 2000 and has passed the House before, but has always stalled in the Senate (Bulatlat). It was refiled in July 2025 (GMA). As of June 2026, nine versions were sitting in a House committee (Bulatlat, June 2026).
City ordinances do protect people. Quezon City's 2014 ordinance bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and it requires all-gender restrooms (OneNews). Davao, Iloilo, Manila, Zamboanga, Cebu City and Bataan have their own ordinances (Rappler).
Same-sex relations are legal (US State Department).
Politics: Geraldine Roman became the first trans woman elected to Congress in 2016, and she served until June 2025 (Wikipedia).
Pageant queens and Pride
The Philippines is a pageant powerhouse. Three Filipinas have won Miss International Queen, the world's best-known trans pageant, held in Pattaya:
The Philippines also made the Top 6 four years running. In 2026, Red Spiegelman placed in the Top 6 at the 19 September final (Elys Planet).
Pride PH Festival in Quezon City drew more than 250,000 people in 2025. Organisers bill it as Asia's largest Pride (Manila Bulletin). The 2026 edition was held on 27 June.
Where to go
Manila
Manila has no single gay district. Venues are spread out, and the scene has shrunk in recent years (The Gay Passport, Sept 2025). These places had 2025 sources showing them open:
Place | Area | What it is | Source |
O Bar | Ortigas, Pasig (Metro Manila) | Drag club, since 2005; Thursday–Sunday
Rampa Drag Club | 27-B Tomas Morato Ave. Ext., Quezon City | Drag shows; reopened at this address May 2025
Jefz Cafe | Malate, Manila | LGBT bar |
Nectar in BGC closed at the end of 2024, so skip it on older lists.
Angeles City
Angeles City is the Philippines' closest match to Pattaya. Fields Avenue in Balibago grew up next to the old Clark Air Base, and a pedestrian "Walking Street" section opened in 2010, modelled on Pattaya's (Wikipedia). We haven't found a recent independent source confirming which ladyboy bars are open there, so check locally.
Fields Avenue, also called Walking Street, is the area's main bar strip (Wikipedia).
Getting there: Clark International Airport (CRK) is about 5.4 miles from Angeles City, roughly 12 minutes by taxi or Grab (Rome2rio). From Manila it's about 104 km by road, around 1 hour 45 minutes (Air Miles Calculator).
Dating in the Philippines
My Transgender Date (formerly MyLadyboyDate) was co-founded in 2013 by Maki Gingoyon, a trans woman from Cebu (Wikipedia). It says it has more than 135,000 profiles (My Transgender Date). That's the company's own figure. Read our dating advice before you start.
Protect yourself:
Romance scams are common, the US State Department warns. Criminals also use dating apps to set up robberies. Meet in public, video-call first, and avoid private rooms on a first meeting (State Department).
Watch for the "stuck package" scam. In this one, an online partner says a parcel for you is held at customs and asks you to pay fees by GCash or into a personal account. The Bureau of Customs says it's a scam (Bureau of Customs).
Never send money to someone you haven't met.
