When we interviewed Patty, a 28-year-old transgender woman from Thailand’s Isaan region, she spoke less about nightlife and more about family, personal growth, and one day returning home to build a new life.

“I want to go back to my hometown, open a small restaurant, and take care of my family.”

Growing Up in Rural Thailand

Patty grew up in northeastern Thailand, about eight hours from Bangkok.

She described her childhood as a happy one, surrounded by both parents and her brother.

Unlike many transgender people who experience rejection, Patty said she considers herself fortunate.

Her family accepted her, allowing her to express herself freely while growing up.

She began taking hormone therapy at around 13 years old because she wanted her appearance to better reflect how she had always felt inside.

Although she later chose breast augmentation, she explained that her family continued supporting her throughout her journey.

Finding Work in Bangkok

Seven months before the interview, Patty began working at a men’s club inside Nana Plaza.

It was her first experience in nightlife.

She admitted feeling nervous because she had very little experience and limited confidence speaking English.

Over time, however, she became more comfortable communicating with international visitors and learning how to connect with people from around the world.

Rather than focusing only on transactions, she explained that she enjoys making customers feel welcome and appreciated.

“I like taking care of customers. I want them to be happy.”

Supporting Her Family Every Month

One of Patty’s biggest motivations is helping the people back home.

Every month she sends around 8,000 baht to support her family.

Because customer numbers change depending on the season, her income isn’t always consistent, but she continues setting aside money whenever she can.

She explained that financial support for her parents is one reason she continues working in Bangkok while planning for a different future.

A Dream Bigger Than Nightlife

Although Patty enjoys meeting people, she doesn’t see nightlife as her long-term future.

Her dream is to save enough money to return to her hometown.

There, she hopes to:

• Open a small restaurant.

• Spend more time caring for her family.

Rather than chasing luxury, she wants stability and the chance to live closer to the people she loves.

Learning From Relationships

Patty has experienced relationships in the past but says she no longer wants unnecessary drama.

Instead, she tries to focus on personal growth, friendships, and creating a peaceful life.

She believes happiness doesn’t have to depend entirely on having a romantic partner.

“I’m happy with my family. I’m happy with my friends. I’m happy doing what I love.”

Although she remains open to love in the future, it is no longer her highest priority.

Living Authentically

Toward the end of the interview, Patty reflected on being transgender in Thailand.

She acknowledged that acceptance has improved but believes some careers remain difficult for transgender people to enter.

Even so, she refuses to let those obstacles define her future.

She also explained that she has chosen not to undergo gender confirmation surgery because she feels comfortable with who she is.

For Patty, authenticity is more important than meeting other people’s expectations.

It’s about using today’s opportunities to build tomorrow’s dreams.
